Good things come from God, bad things come from Satan and man's sinful nature and actions. What is James saying? God gives only good and perfect things – always! He doesn’t vary from His M.O. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” ( James 1:17). “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” ( Matthew 7:11). God is uniquely good and He only creates good. Here is some really simple theology for you that will help you make sense of every situation. God is not behind your problem – He is behind your promise. So where does evil come from? It's the result of man using his free will to go against God and His ways and therefore, to side with the devil! He's been trying to get us to believe the lie that God is responsible for evil in the world, when in fact, God only created good. Yes, the devil has been trying to trick us into thinking that God is not good since the very beginning. When we doubt the goodness of God, it opens the door for Satan to attack us with all sorts of maladies. It's the same thing he does with us today. What was Satan doing? Getting Adam and Eve to doubt the goodness of God. However the serpent in the garden attacked God's motives and character, insinuating that God was holding out on them. But God didn’t want them to eat of the tree, because He didn’t want humanity to ever know anything but good! The tree in Eden had to be there to provide Adam and Eve with a free-will choice to love and follow God. Moreover, I think it is clear that God never wanted you and me to know bad, or experience bad in our lives. When God created everything in the universe, He was specific to end each day of creation with the words “…and it was good.”Īnd after He created you and me, He added “and it was very good.” Whatever God creates. In a simple review of the Genesis account of creation, God shows us that He only creates that which is good. He simply is good He loves us and enjoys being good. His goodness is unmatched, unparalleled, unprecedented and unequalled! When it comes to goodness, God is in a class all by Himself. God does good and gets nothing in return. This is better, but doesn't it still mean that we are being good with an ulterior motive? We do good to others hoping they will return the favor.īut what Jesus was saying to the rich young ruler is that when it comes to "goodness," God is uniquely good. Jesus set the bar a bit higher with the Golden Rule: Do unto others first what you would have them do unto you. Usually, we humans will show goodness to others after it has been shown to us first. “Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ So Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God’” ( Luke 18:18-19). Father God, would You please fix this?! I have taught them that He is trustworthy, because He is truly a good Father. Thankfully, I have instilled in them the knowledge that their Heavenly Father is always there and ready, willing and able to help when they cry out. But as much as I love my kids and do whatever I can to provide for them and to protect them, I know that I cannot always be there to fix what is broken in their lives, especially now that they are young adults beginning their own lives.
